Welcome to Cotignac, one of the most beautiful villages in France!
With its cobbled streets and colorful facades, this Provençal village is a real living postcard. But beyond its picturesque charm, Cotignac has many surprises in store.
Built around its imposing rock, Cotignac is home to caves and troglodyte houses which bear witness to a past rich in history. Its sanctuaries, true places of Christian pilgrimage, offer panoramic views that invite contemplation.
So, put on your sneakers and set off to explore Cotignac!
The village of Cotignac as we see it today, nestling at the foot of its impressive tufa cliff, wasn't always like this.
The first settlements were at the top of the cliff, near the source of the Cassole.
In the Middle Ages, fortifications were built, of which only the two Saracen towers visible at the top of the rock remain.
When the Cassole waterfall was diverted from its original course, the caves were used as hiding places by the inhabitants during invasions, and later as granaries or troglodyte dwellings.
Until the 19th century, the caves were used as quarries to build new homes as the village grew at the foot of the rock.
From the centre of the village, take the stairs up the cliff, through the narrow streets and gardens. Don't worry about getting tired - the beauty of the scenery will make you forget your efforts!
At the top of the cliff, you'll reach the highest building built in the rock.

A shrine dedicated to the Virgin Mary, the Notre-Dame de Grâces chapel in Cotignac is an active place of pilgrimage.
Built in the 16th century, it is said to have been the scene of several holy apparitions recognised by the Church. Louis XIV is said to owe his birth to a vow made there by his mother Anne of Austria.
It has a very fine view over the plain and surrounding hills.
If you continue on foot from Notre Dame de Grâces, you can reach the Saint Joseph Monastery.
While Notre Dame de Grâce was built as a tribute to the Virgin Mary, who appeared there twice in succession, the monastery of Saint Joseph du Bessillon was built on the site of the apparition of Joseph, Mary's husband. The site is home to what is known as a miraculous spring.
Several Christian pilgrims go to this sacred site.
